Mara Consulting worked with Laing O’Rourke to support the construction of new rail infrastructure and train station in the inner-city of Newcastle. The project was a key part of the NSW Government’s Newcastle Urban Transformation Transport Program, a coordinated program of planning, urban renewal and transport initiatives designed to attract people back to the city centre and invigorate Newcastle’s CBD.

Mara acted as the key point of contact with local residents and government representatives (local and state) to ensure there were no delays due to stakeholder concerns. Over the course of the project, the team developed positive relationships with community members keeping them informed of construction, including any impacts that they may experience.

Mara’s role included seeking stakeholder feedback through the detailed design process, coordinating consultation events with agencies, government departments, council and key stakeholders.

Mara managed a complex project in a community which displayed a diversity of reactions to the Newcastle Interchange. We are delighted with Mara's stellar communications and public relations performance and the outcomes they have been able to achieve.

Local expertise

Mara's team of communication and engagement specialists, were a key member of the Laing O'Rourke management team. Their local knowledge and experience dealing with the community, media and government representatives, resulted in proactive issue management and minimal complaints. This was a high profile and contentious project that opened 2017 to the public with great acclaim.

Photography, video and media comment

As a communications team, Mara was on hand to capture some spectacular moments through the construction. Many of the images and video footage can be seen in the media, in print and digital publications of both Laing O'Rourke and TfNSW.

Workshop facilitation and event management

They also hosted community events with residents and local preschoolers, visiting the construction site for a behind the scenes look at the project. Mara's trained facilitators conducted a leadership workshop with all senior project staff on behalf of Laing O'Rourke.
